This 12 part composition tested 3 main retouching disciplines; perspective composition, fine colour balancing and the ability to draw snow!

New York was photographed in August (not snowy) as the basis for an image of winter (snowy).

Our mission was to create a cold scene with a warm feeling – to impress on the audience that whilst snowdrifts in winter speak of discomfort and isolation, DHL deliver that heartwarming, cheering solution.

To kick off, we manipulated the various background elements into a composition that allowed for various different crops to work whilst maintaining all perspectives.

The hero building was given a cosmetic clean up and work to enhance the ‘dressed’ snow. The interior was dropped in from a studio shot and all lightning matched. The rest of the background was snow free and required hours of work to mask all of the horizontal surfaces, before adding snow with a ‘lived in’ look and tracks for the cars and people. Finally we developed the colour mood and made the snow fall from the sky.
