Getting hundreds of raccoons to support the same team was never going to be straightforward.
In this case, it involved cutting out each raccoon from its background and comping them all together to form a believable crowd.
To aid the process we consulted with Andy and agreed on using bluescreen to photograph the raccoons in hundreds of different poses. This allowed us to use powerful compositing software to automate part of the masking process, which sped things up no end. With half the battle won, we then had to gradually build up layers of raccoons whilst taking care to match each to the stadium lighting and to cast shadows where appropriate. Expressions were enhanced and the scene was brought to fanatic life with scarves, ticker tape and Football-Italia style flares. It’s a whole eyeful of furry fanaticism.
